Messiter’s Messages

By Mr. Robert Messiter, Housemaster

“Accountability is the key to meaningful personal growth” - RG Messiter

Hello to everyone in the Wakehurst family. I am going to keep this short as this newsletter has been put together by the students for the students - as will be the case once a term from now on. Congratulations to our Editor-in-Chief, Oscar Xing (Y11) for his work. The newsletter shows an admittedly small sample but undoubtedly impressive porthole view of life in Wakehurst. Please be aware; it is not meant as any sort of full record and has been put together from volunteer contributors writing about what they want to.

The pastoral theme for Term 1 has been an exploration of 'Courage' and we have seen many and varied examples of this in Wakehurst. We are proud of achievements (and celebrate these fully 'in-house') but also the day to day atmosphere we have created and the intangible benefits this has.

My message on courage? I always encourage Wakehurstians to take responsibility for their actions in a world that increasingly encourages entitlement. Teenagers make mistakes but if they can reflect honestly they can learn and grow. This process takes courage and I will always support them. As they know, my door is always open!

Have a great easter break and very best wishes to you and your family.

Will Harris

Will Harris is a champion Year 7 Sailor, representing our house, our school and our state in all different facets of sailing.

With regards to his sailing, along with the Schools Teams Racing, he is also very competitive in the Optimist Class. He will compete in the NSW championships in a few weeks at Lake Macquarie, and will then fly to New Zealand for the NZ National Championships in Auckland. For this he will need a little time off school - is it possible for him to have a half day on Wednesday April 9th, and then have Thursday (10th) and Friday (11th) off school?

Later in the year, he qualified to compete in the 2025 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships in Oman. The details for this are still being worked out, but I will let you know when we find out.

Here is a photo of Will at the 2025 Australian National Championships in Brisbane in January where he came 20th overall.

Good job Will! A true Wakehurstian.
